I will be there with my pre OBD I Z.
Unless you bought a car I don't know about, both of our Zs are OBD I.
We just don't have diagnostic plugs from the Z31, obviously.
Nissan actually didn't add consult diagnostic until the 1990 model year for most of their USDM vehicles. What I'm sure he meant to say was any 1990-1995 Nissan, or any Z32

I actually did a small research paper on legacy OBD systems a while back.
OBD2, which was pushed forward by CARB and later SAE was 'recommended' in 1988 but only finally made mandatory in 1996, it is what defined the previous 'loose" OBD definitions as OBD1 (or OBD0). OBD1 in my opinion is a misnomer of sorts because you would be lead to believe it implies some kind of standrad for ECU/PCM diagnostics. It only really meant the unit HAS onboard diagnostics which were implemented before OBD2.
That being said, previous to 1990 most Nissan ECCS units have onboard diagnostic mode selectors and flash a sequence of LED's on the unit itself to display the code. It's actually easier because you don't need a scan tool, but it's less advanced because you can't display any engine metrics. For most earlier models, Nistune's USB consult takes care of that by offering a full display of all engine metrics, cell and interpolative tracing on all maps, logging, DTC's, sensor/solenoid commanded positions, etc. It's actually slightly better than regular Nissan consult. The only thing is, you have to buy and install the board for the supported ECCS. If you wanted a consult connector in your S30/Z31 (for those of you running Z31 ECCS/maf) The Infiniti M30 ECCS can be adapted to the harness and is very similar to the 88-89 (3rd type) Z31 ECCS units. It also has true sequential injection with 6 onboard drivers instead of two...
